About COPD Canada Patient Network

(a Registered  Tax Deductible Charitable Organization)

83% of  the COPD Canada Patient Network membership consists of patients although we also have caregivers, medical professionals and Clinicians as  members.

All of us who oversee and run the organization is a volunteer;  we have no paid positions nor do we issue honorariums.

Everyone who "signs up" becomes a registered member (at large)  has a vote at our Annual General Meeting which is held "on line" every spring. The majority of us on the Board; are patients ourselves.

CCPN's registration number with Canada Revenue is   84111 2212 RR0001 as  COPD Canada Patient Network.

Though we charge no dues or fees whatsoever, as a  federally incorporated,   tax deductible health charity, our organization is reliant upon donations to operate.  All funds received goes back to patients in some fashion.

We Believe:

-  No one has to be alone with this disease

-  In education.  Ourselves, our Dr's, our families and the general public.

-  In COPD  Info sharing

-  In Mutual Support, Understanding & Caring

-  In Advocacy; starting with "Self Advocacy"

-  That every patient has a right to the best medicines and the best care.

-  In assisting organizations,  whenever feasible, by providing input, planning and participation in projects or

studies as it relates to lung health, and more specifically COPD.

-  In living "with"  this disease, NOT "suffering from."

-  In focusing on what we CAN do; not what we can't.

Our Mission   (abbreviated):

Our mandate/mission is to educate the individual patient and  the general public, and assist those who have been, or will be, diagnosed with COPD including their families & support/care givers .

To further  promote awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease through various channels, avenues and methods;  to advocate for better "everything" as it pertains to this disease,  to push for earlier testing, and to link/network current COPDer's.

    The Directors  are:

-   Jackie Whitaker, NS

-   Chris Wigley, BC

-   Brian Vandurme, SK

-   Gwen Wigley, BC

-   Carolyn Hains, AB

-   Dave Raymer, NS

There are many excellent sites on the internet pertaining to COPD.  However; with the exception of the Canadian Lung Association and the Canadian Thoracic Society (and even that has only occured in the last few years) there's  been limited information addressing COPD here in Canada. Especially FOR COPD patients!  Recognizing a need  for information relative to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and for those living with it, this site was built.  It was a first.

This site itself  was originally developed  and launched in November 2005 for World COPD Day by a COPD patient (Jackie Whitaker) and is currently still overseen and edited by her.   In October 2007 COPD Canada became an organized group, incorporated as  a not for profit corporation  and became COPD Canada Patient Network.

In 2008 it received Charitable Status.

Although intended as an easy to navigate information resource for patients; many  companies, organizations, individuals; domestically and internationally, use and  to benefit,  from this patient oriented website.
